What If a Provider Declines Me?

Being turned down is frustrating, but it doesn't mean every provider will do the same. What to do next, from finding out why to trying the next option.

A decline from one provider doesn't mean others will say no. Here's what to do next.

1. Report it

On the provider's card, choose Did it open for you? and then No, declined. It helps other members, and the provider appears under Your Applications on the My feedback page.

2. Find out why, if you can

Ask the provider whether it can tell you the reason. If it was because of a fraud prevention check, it may tell you which agency the information came from. Providers aren't always able to give a full reason.

3. Try the next option

Go back to the same category and look at the other providers, starting with those labelled Generally accepts. The Community view of My feedback shows which providers other members have been accepted by. Check each provider's own eligibility rules before applying.

4. Deal with the marker itself

If your marker keeps getting in the way, ask CIFAS for a free copy of what it holds about you from the CIFAS website. If you think the marker is wrong, ADVICIFAS Pro can help you challenge it.

Several credit applications in a short time can show on your credit file. Space out applications that involve a credit check, and check each provider's process first.
